Friday, 25 November 2022 We are inviting you to watch 1. st Famnits' Biological Evening

The first lecture of the Famnits Biological Evenings was " Restoring nature – from international commitments to local actions", given by Dr. Dagmar Hagen, a researcher at the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA).

The presentation began with the lecturer giving a broad perspective on the need for restoration, and how ecosystem restoration has entered the international arena of policy, science and economy during the last years. She described and illustrate how to connect the global restoration targets with local planning, and how the solutions must be found on local scale. By using examples from restoration and mitigation projects in different nature types, the lecturer demonstrated how the input from ecosystem restoration can contribute to reduce the loss of nature and to the recovery of degraded land. The lecture demontsrated how the involvement of stakeholders, cooperation with local contractors, and integration of scientific and tacit knowledge produce measurable outcome for ecology, society and economy.

Monday, 21 November 2022 InnoRenew CoE successfully organized the International Conference 2022 on buildings and materials for a sustainable future is approaching

The research institute InnoRenew CoE and University of Primorska organized the InnoRenew CoE International Conference 2022, »Rethinking buildings and materials for a sustainable future«, which took place 17-18 November 2022, in the new InnoRenew CoE building in Izola, the largest wooden building In Slovenia.

Dr. Michael Burnard, InnoRenew CoE deputy director, opened the conference and welcomed attendees saying, »I am glad you are here today to discuss different fields and interdisciplinary topics related to buildings so that we can learn to better serve occupants, reduce climate impacts, and drive innovation in the field.«

The keynote address was given by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Thomas Brudermann, a professor at the University of Graz with the doctoral degree in psychology. He spoke about rethinking the role of individual decision for a sustainable future: »We still don’t know enough about climate change, our knowledge is not accurate, and there are a lot of misconceptions. Often times we overestimate our skills and knowledge.«

Additionally he pointed out that »in order to reach a more sustainable society we need individual decision context in which it is easier to behave environmentally friendly.« Dr. Brudermann is sure that by generating more awareness and knowledge it is possible to  determine greater acceptance of sustainability measures.

Participants could attend several presentations, during four thematic sessions about environmentally friendly and energy-efficient materials and practices to improve the built environment, state-of-the-art solutions for building design and assessment, built environments for well-being and how to bridge the gap between research and society.

Moreover, a special workshop in the framework of the European Year of Youth entitled »Wood material flows modelling: issues, challenges, and a better future for our youth« was organized.

»This workshop presents our experience on data collection and collation from various data sources and in-person interviews in the scope of the E-LVO (Economic, environmental and social aspects of wood processing and its use and carbon sequestration) project,« said Dr. Balázs Dávid and added: »In addition to presenting the encountered obstacles and devised solutions, the workshop is intended as a discussion on this topic, trying to find a sensible suggestion how the available data collection system could be improved.« The E-LVO project is financed by the Slovenian Research Agency and the Ministry of Economic Development and Technology.

Dr. Esakkiammal Sudha Esakkimuthu held a workshop in the framework of the MSCA project about renewable material composite preparation and she showcased the modified lignin nanoparticles for composite and bio-aased/Cu packaging applications products.

Also this year the conference presented an opportunity to share and discuss emerging science and innovations in renewable materials that can be used in the built environment to enhance human and environmental well-being.

Thursday, 10 November 2022 This year's autumn meeting of the Botanical Society of Slovenia was successfully hosted by the Department of Biodiversity at UP FAMNIT

Since 2011, the Botanical Society of Slovenia has been celebrating the Wraber Day (Slovene: Wraberjev dan) at its annual meetings. On Saturday, November 5, 2022, the UP FAMNIT Department of Biodiversity hosted the traditional autumn meeting in the Livade 1.0 object in Izola.

The Wraber days were named after the Slovenian botanist Tone Wraber, an honorary member of the Botanical Society of Slovenia.

At the event, current topics in the field of botany were discussed, among others we also answered questions about what DNA reveals to us about the evolution of carnivoran milkweed (Euphorbia carniolica) and how diverse sweet milkweed (Euphorbia dulcis) is.

Below we share some photo highlights from the event.

Thursday, 3 November 2022 UP FAMNIT continues with the successful cooperation of the Department of Biodiversity with organizations from practice

On Wednesday, 26 October 2022, the Department of Biodiversity hosted an event aimed to exchange opinions and to present organisations, where students of the study programmes Conservation Biology (BSc) and Nature Conservation (MSc) had already taken their internship opportunities. 13 organisations responded to the invitation for his hybrid event, and 8 of them presented their activities to the students last week.

The meeting was organised to enhance the quality of the internship experience and improve the interaction with those organisations, which have an interest in working with our department and our students.

»We are very pleased to have been able to host such an event, because we believe that our students, besides getting the information about the internship opportunities offered by various organisations working in the fields of nature conservation, biology and education, also got the first impression of their potential employers and their mission,« said assist. Martin Senič from the Department of Biodiversity at UP FAMNIT.

We would also like to thank all the present organisations and their representatives for their participation and looking forward for the future collaboration:
