Friday, 26 August 2022 August ends with the successful summer camp editions

We spent the last days of August in the company of young enthusiasts of mathematics and computer science, who participated in the summer camps Matematika je KUL and Orada RAčunalniška Delavnica. In this year's edition, 15 elementary and high school students joined us with a united desire to discover both mathematical riddles and computer science tricks.

During the lectures, which took place from 21 to 25 August at UP Famnit, the participants of the Matematika je KUL camp learned about the beginnings of cryptography as well as statistics, where they learned more about security keys and predictions such as who will win the election or what the next day's weather will be like. They acquired new knowledge about graph theory, the application of mathematics in biology and game theory.

Young computer science enthusiasts, who made up the curious group of participants of the Orada RAčunalniška Delavnica camp, had the opportunity to learn and create their own computer game with the Unity 3D tool and got to know the world of cryptocurrencies and secret codes, then and now.

Participants used the newly acquired knowledge in group workshops to prepare final products, which they presented to their parents on the last day of the camp.

The entertainment part was, of course, also taken care of, which the participants, as they themselves added, particularly liked. We hung out over various mind games and sports activities, tried out VR glasses and danced in body tracking suits.

UP FAMNIT organizes camps with the aim of popularizing mathematics and computer science, as we strive to show young people with examples from practice that these fields can be fun, interesting and, above all, useful. The participants who return to the camps are proof of the achieved purpose and success of the camps.

Tuesday, 16 August 2022 In collaboration with the University Claude Bernard Lyon 1 a Web-based temperature regulation application was created

The Faculty for Mathematics, Natural Science and Information Technologies (UP FAMNIT), hosted Assoc. Prof. Lionel Medini, who took part in a one-week ERASMUS + exchange, from 2 August to 8 August 2022, where he collaborated with Prof. Michael Mrissa.

Prof. Medini is a researcher and associate professor of computer science from Claude Bernard Lyon 1 University in France.

The purpose of the visit was both research discussion, knowledge transfer and lectures, which consisted of the first part about the Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), a second part about Web of Things (WoT) development, and the third part about Web application development.

Each lecture was combined with a practical session, where the students could experiment with the technologies and with physical hardware lent by Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1, through which they were able to create a Web-based temperature regulation application.

The Web application dynamically detects users' activity and adjusts their minimum and maximum temperature preferences accordingly.

More about the application can be read here

Friday, 5 August 2022 Active summer - we visited the All-Slovenian scouts’ event Taborniški Zlet 2022

At Famnit, we have an active summer despite the summer break. Our researchers and students took part in an All-Slovenian scoutevent Taborniški zlet 2022, which hosted over 700 scouts and 300 volunteers from Slovenia.

It is the biggest event for young scouts in Slovenia organized by the Association of scouts, taking place from 29 July to 7 August 2022 at the Ski Resort Cerkno. The event is organised only every four years and it is an excellent opportunity to meet old friends, and at the same time to actively connect with nature and oneself, as the organizers wrote on their website invitation.

As the head of the Association of Campers of Slovenia added in his statement for the RTV Slovenia: “The main thread of the program this year is the code of visits to nature, which has various components, one of the main ones being that we are in nature and that we have a sustainable and positive impact on nature.”

As in the contribution of RTV Slovenia, the Association of Campers of Slovenia added that this year the basis of the program is the codex of visits to nature, which has various sections, one of the main ones being that we part of the nature and that we should have a sustainable and positive impact on it.

In the first part of the week, the scouts set off on a four-day journey. After their return, together with the volunteers, they co-created a camp at the top of the Cerkno Ski Resort, where they are spending the rest of the week socializing and engaging in various activities before returning home.

Afternoons at the camp are dedicated to workshops that are promoting science, some of which were organized by Famnit's researchers and students. Young participants had the opportunity to participate in various puzzle games and computer science workshops.

This is what Karolina Trajkovska, Famnit student of Computer scence had to say about participating at the event: "It was a lot of fun working with the children and showing them the work we do at Famnit and the HICUP Lab. I believe the event was enjoyed by the children as well. They were really interested in all of our activities. By participating, they also picked up some programming skills and some new Japanese words. Overall, I'd say it was a really successful day. It was an amazing experience that I would gladly repeat at any time."

Here are some more highlights from Taborniški Zlet
