Friday, 3 July 2026 Tomaž Pisanski Among the Recipients of the Croatian Mathematical Society Award
The Croatian Mathematical Society (CMS) has announced the recipients of its Awards for Professional Contributions published in 2024 and 2025. Among the awardees is Professor Tomaž Pisanski, who received the award for his lecture "Lah Numbers and the Life and Work of Ivo Lah" (Lahovi brojevi te život i djelo Ive Laha), presented within the framework of the CMS Engineering Section.
The Croatian Mathematical Society is the professional association of mathematicians in the Republic of Croatia. Its mission is to promote mathematical research, mathematics education at all levels, the application of mathematics in other disciplines, and the role of mathematicians in society. The Society presents Awards for Professional Contributions to encourage high-quality scientific and professional communication through its publications, affiliated journals, websites, video channels, and other forms of scholarly outreach. The selection process is based on nominations submitted by Society members and editorial boards, followed by a vote of the CMS membership.
About the lecture: On 5 September, it will be 130 years since the birth of Ivo Lah (1896–1979), the mathematician after whom the Lah numbers are named. To commemorate this anniversary, Post of Slovenia issued a special commemorative postage stamp on 30 January 2026. The lecture provides a brief introduction to Lah numbers and outlines Ivo Lah's life and work. Particular emphasis is placed on his connection with Zagreb, where he pursued his education after the First World War. The lecture also highlights the scientific and professional journal Glasnik društva aktuara Kraljevine Jugoslavije (Bulletin of the Society of Actuaries of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia), which Ivo Lah founded and edited immediately before the Second World War. Finally, the lecture discusses some reasons the creator of the Lah numbers remained largely overlooked for so long.
We extend our sincere congratulations to Professor Pisanski on receiving this well-deserved recognition.
