Thursday, 29 May 2025 Today we welcomed students from II. Gymnasium Maribor

Today, as part of a Natural Science Day, we were visited by 20 students from II. Gymnasium Maribor.

The students were initially divided into two groups, for which we prepared a workshop titled Plant Life of the Slovenian Littoral, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Živa Fišer from the Department of Biodiversity UP FAMNIT, and a presentation of the SRNA application for monitoring wildlife populations, delivered by Assist. Luka Duniš, also from the Department of Biodiversity at UP FAMNIT.

In the first workshop, students explored several plant species typical of the Slovenian Littoral, focusing on Mediterranean flora. Using microscopes and magnifying glasses, they examined characteristic anatomical and morphological adaptations to environments where drought, high temperatures, and strong sunlight are common.

Students and their teachers also had the opportunity to participate in a treasure hunt titled Fantastic Animals and Where to Record Them, during which they learned how to collect and use data on wildlife. The scientific SRNA applicationdeveloped as part of the Step Change project and aimed at gathering data on wild animal populationswas also presented.

To conclude the visit, the students went on a field trip along the Strunjan coast to investigate the local coastal ecosystem. They discovered various marine organisms (e.g. shells, snails, crabs), searched for them, and identified them using classification keys. In addition to learning about marine biodiversity, they were introduced to the principles of respectful behaviour in nature and the proper handling of living organisms.
