Monday, 23 June 2025 Mathematical Modeling of Bioreactor Processes: Results from the Collaboration with Novartis

At the Mathematical Research Seminar, second-cycle students from UP FAMNIT and UL FMF will present the outcomes of the ImmBIO project, which was conducted from January 10 to June 9, 2025, in collaboration with Novartis. The project focused on the development of mathematical models for bioreactors and was carried out under the public call Problem-Based Learning for Students in the Workplace: Economy, Non-Economy, and Non-Profit Sectors in the Local/Regional Environment 2024–2027.

Under the guidance of academic and industry mentors, the students were organized into three groups and explored several key topics through regular meetings, including:

  • CFD modeling of mixing processes in bioreactors, involving the evaluation of turbulent models such as k-ε and LES, and the use of tracer particles to assess medium homogenization.

  • Mechanistic modeling of bioreactors, developing one-dimensional models based on ordinary differential equations, as well as two-dimensional models using partial differential equations, solved via numerical methods.

  • Modeling of the Single-Pass Tangential Flow Filtration (SPTFF) process to analyze and optimize process parameters.
