Monday, 31 May 2021 11th generation of UP FAMNIT graduates

On Friday, May 28, UP FAMNIT celebrated a new generation of graduates. Although the current measures to prevent COVID-19 did not allow us to organize the ceremony in the way we are used to, we managed to organise the event in a safe but also solemn way too. In fact, the ceremony took place partly online and partly in presence at the faculty. The official part of the graduation ceremony, which was led by the UP FAMNIT Student Council, was followed by an official outdoor photo session.

The 11th generation of graduates was addressed by the rector of the University of Primorska, Prof. Klavdija Kutnar, PhD, as well as the UP FAMNIT Dean, Assoc. Prof. Ademir Hujdurović, PhD. Two students shared their memories and thoughts at the end of their study experiences at the faculty: Nejc Prinčič, graduate of the undergraduate study programme in Biodiversity, and Hana Remešová, first graduate of the master's study programme in Sustainable Built Environments.

The eleventh generation of UP FAMNIT graduates - there have been exactly 100 of them in the last year - will enrich the broader national and international community with their skills and knowledge as: graduate bioinformatics, conservation biologists, biopsychologists, mathematicians, financial mathematicians, computer science and agricultural engineers, and masters of mathematics, nature conservation, computer science, sustainable built environments and psychology. Video-congratulations on the completion of their studies were also sent by Nikola Šavle, from Kmetijska zadruga Agraria Koper z.o.o., and Andrej Erzetič from BOOD d.o.o. company.

The ceremony ended with a very warm congratulation message sent by the study programmes coordinators (video at this link).

On this link you will find the list of our graduates with the titles of their final papers/master's thesis.

Friday, 14 May 2021 Women of Mathematics throughout Europe - A Gallery of portraits

Extended Exhibition as part of the 8ECM opening on Saturday, 15 May 2021

The University of Primorska is hosting an extended exhibition »Women of Mathematics throughout Europe - A Gallery of portaits”, edited by Sylvie Paycha and Noel Tovia Matoff, as part of the 8th European Congress of Mathematics.

The organizer of the exhibition is the Committee for Women at the Society of Mathematicians, Physicists and Astronomers of Slovenia (DMFA). The Committee is devoted to promoting the studies of mathematics, physics and astronomy among girls and women, and is advocating achievements of women in science.

The exhibition opens on Saturday, May 15th at 11 am in Armerija Palace, Koper (Lobby of the University of Primorska), and it will be open during the 8ECM, until 30 June 2021.

The opening speakers are:

  • Klavdija Kutnar, Rector of the University of Primorska and 8ECM Organizing committee Deputy Chair,
  • Tomaž Pisanski, 8ECM Organizing Committee Chair
  • Neža Mramor Kosta, one of the portrayed mathematicians presenting the Committee for Women at DMFA.

Women of Mathematics throughout Europe is a touring exhibition whose starting point was the 7th ECM held in July 2016 in Berlin. It was, however, extended for the 8ECM, introducing mathematicians from the Euro-Mediterranean region. A new catalogue presenting all speakers is also available for order at: https://womeninmath.net/catalogue/

The exhibition is a part of the May12 movement, which is celebrating Women in Mathematics and promoting 120 events worldwide. The movement was initiated on 31st July 2018 at the World Meeting for Women in Mathematics, (WM)^2 in Rio de Janeiro in memory of Maryam Mirzakhani’s birthday.

We look forward to welcoming you in Portorož and Koper for the 8ECM and the exhibition!
