8th European Congress of Mathematics - 8ECM

The Department of Mathematics of the University of Primorska, in cooperation with representatives of all Slovenian institutions engaged in research in mathematics, applied for the organization of the 8th European Congress of Mathematics in 2020. The Council of the European Mathematical Society, assembling at the 7th European Congress of Mathematics in July 2016 in Berlin, recognized the potential of the Slovenian candidates and chose us as the organizers of the next Congress.
European Congresses of Mathematics (ECM) are held under the auspices of the European Mathematical Society - EMS. This is the second largest assembly of mathematicians in the world, second only to the the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM). The ECM is attended by over 1,000 researchers and doctoral students every four years.
The congress is organized by UP FAMNIT in cooperation with the Andrej Marušič Institute of the University of Primorska, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Education, University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, University of Maribor, Society of Mathematicians, Physicists and Astronomers, Institute of Mathematics, Physics and Mechanics, Slovenian Discrete and Applied Mathematics Society, Jožef Stefan Institute and Abelium doo.
This is a great success of Slovenian mathematics, as Slovenia has never hosted such an important event in this field. The event is also supported by the honorary patronage of the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Mr. Borut Pahor.
The Congress was originally scheduled for 2020, but due to the global Coronavirus Pandemic (COVID - 19), it has been postponed to 2021.
