Invitation to UP FAMNIT Students to Participate in PŠU Projects 2026/2027 within the framework of the School of Sustainable Development

UP FAMNIT has received an invitation from the School of Sustainable Development to include our students in PŠU projects. The School of Sustainable Development is an independent higher education institution operating within the B&B Educational Centre, located at Ljubljanska cesta 30, 4000 Kranj, Slovenia.

We invite UP FAMNIT students to join us in addressing the practical challenges companies face. Companies producing food products are increasingly confronted with the question of how to reduce the environmental impacts of production, use raw materials more efficiently, reduce the amount of waste generated, and at the same time take into account the impacts of food supply chains on biodiversity.

Within the framework of two projects, students will, under the guidance of mentors, analyse the environmental, circular economy, and nature conservation aspects of production based on a selected food product or production process, and prepare proposals for improvements for the company. The aim of both projects is to enable students to gain concrete experience in addressing practical challenges in the business environment.

Based on a selected food product or process, you will analyse circular aspects of production, particularly the use of raw materials, energy, water, packaging, and waste generation, as well as biodiversity-related aspects of the supply chain, with a focus on the origin of raw materials and the impacts of production on habitats, species, soil, water, and pollinators. Based on your findings, you will prepare a set of feasible measures to reduce the environmental and biodiversity footprint of the product.

Through this work, you will integrate interdisciplinary knowledge from the fields of sustainable development, environmental management, circular economy, conservation biology, and data analysis.

Each project will include two undergraduate students from the Conservation Biology programme and one student enrolled in a second- or third-cycle programme. We are therefore inviting applications from:

• 4 students enrolled in the first-cycle university study programme at UP FAMNIT – Conservation Biology track (2 students will be selected for each project);
• 2 students (from any study field) enrolled in a second- or third-cycle programme at UP FAMNIT.

How will the project be carried out?

The project will last 5 months. (Organizacija študijskega dela, 2026) Project activities will take place as a supplement to the regular study process. Most of the work will be carried out in student groups or independently, with guidance from mentors from the company and the School of Sustainable Development. The work will mainly be conducted online, but you can also expect several in-person meetings. At the end of the project, you will receive a financial reward and a certificate of participation for your completed work. (Začasno in občasno delo dijakov in študentov, 2026)

The project activities will be carried out within the framework of the public call “Public Call for Problem-Based Learning of Students in the Work Environment: Economy, Non-Economy and Non-Profit Sector in the Local/Regional Environment 2024–2027 (PŠU in the Work Environment 2024–2027)”. Therefore, students who are enrolled in a publicly valid study programme in the Republic of Slovenia at the time of project implementation may participate.

An important condition for participation is that, during the implementation of the project, students are not employed or self-employed and are not registered in the records of unemployed persons or jobseekers at the Employment Service of the Republic of Slovenia.

In the event of a larger number of applications, a selection process will be conducted. When deciding whether to apply, please consider that:

• you will need to be available for at least 5 months (approximately from mid-October 2026 to mid-March 2027);
• you will be expected to work on the project for approximately 40 hours per month, or around 200 hours in total during the project period (partly through team meetings, partly through independent work at home, and partly at the company);
• you will need to collaborate with colleagues from other faculties who will also be members of the project team;
• you must be enrolled in the selected study programme and maintain active student status throughout the entire duration of the project;
• the work is paid, and you will need to provide a student work referral form (študentska napotnica).
