Wednesday, 12 November 2025 Dr. Alan Said (University of Gothenburg) on the environmental impact of recommender systems

On Monday, 10 November 2025, the Monday Computer Science Seminar hosted Dr. Alan Said, Associate Professor at the University of Gothenburg.

In his lecture titled “The Environmental Cost of Recommender Systems,” Dr Said presented the findings of a study featured at the ACM RecSys 2024 conference. The research analysed 79 papers on recommender systems published between 2013 and 2023 and revealed that deep-learning-based recommender systems emit, on average, 42 times more CO₂ equivalents than traditional approaches.

Dr Said highlighted the importance of sustainable practices and greater awareness of environmental impacts in artificial-intelligence research.

We thank Dr. Said for his inspiring lecture and invite all participants to follow the upcoming seminars in the series: https://www.famnit.upr.si/sl/ponedeljkov-seminar-rin/latest
