“Strunjan Artichoke” – Artichoke Propagation

Artichokes are generally not propagated from seed, but rather from shoots of selected mother plants. This method of propagation is particularly important because it allows the characteristics and properties of a particular variety to be preserved in new plants.

Local growers’ knowledge also plays an important role in this process. This knowledge has been developed over the years through experience and observation of the plants. Local growers are particularly familiar with the specific characteristics of artichoke cultivation in the local environment, know which plants are most suitable for further propagation, and understand how to care for them to ensure healthy growth and a high-quality yield.

As part of the project, we will combine this valuable local knowledge with a professional approach and use it to establish the first mother plantation of “Strunjan Artichoke”. The plantation will include plant material from local farms, which will serve as a basis for further research into “Strunjan Artichoke”, the preservation of its characteristics, and the production of high-quality seedlings. In this way, we aim to contribute to preserving the local tradition of cultivation and to the further development of this characteristic Istrian variety.

The “Strunjan Artichoke” project is being implemented within the framework of LAS Zelena Istra and is co-financed by the European Union through the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD), under the CAP Strategic Plan 2023–2027 (LEADER/CLLD).
