Opis / Description
Medicinal plants are valuable sources of bioactive compounds, making them desirable for cultivation. Through agronomic research, their quality, sustainability, and profitability can be significantly enhanced. Immortelle or curry plant(Helichrysum italicum) is one of the most remarkable and iconic medicinal plants of the Mediterranean area and represents an outstanding reservoir of bioactive compounds with unique biological properties. H. italicum grows in dryand stony areas, exposed to sun, and is widely distributed from the rocky shores to high mountains. Their aerial parts have been used in traditional medicine for centuries to treat digestive disorders, skin inflammation and respiratorydiseases, for antimicrobial uses and wound healing. Nowadays, immortelle essential oil is highly appreciated in the glamorous perfumery due to its spicy saffron character and in the cosmetics industry for its anti-ageing properties. It isimportant to emphasize that properties of H. italicum are not limited to perfume and cosmetic industry as they can benefit human health as well. Gene discovery in the area of bioactive compound synthesis is completely unexplored asresearch has mainly been focused on chemical characterization of essential oil and in vitro pharmacological activities.
In the wild Adriatic H. italicum species, numerous chemotypes occur in close geographic proximity. Previous crossing experiments have demonstrated that chemotype variation is highly heritable. Moreover, the extremely diversechemotypes have never been studied using a genomic approach, and the genes underlying these chemical polymorphisms have not been identified. Until now, all investigations were focused on chemical composition without attentionon plant genetics. The overall conclusion is that there is an urgent need for a forward genetics approach in H. italicum. Deciphering the genetics of this chemotype variation is a first step toward understanding the impact of genomicson the specialized secondary metabolism of H. italicum.
