Biotska globalizacija in okoljske spremembe vse hitreje preoblikujejo biotsko raznovrstnost. Globalni pretok organizmov, podnebne spremembe, spremembe rabe prostora, degradacija in fragmentacija habitatov ter drugi antropogeni pritiski hkrati spodbujajo širjenje tujerodnih in invazivnih vrst, spreminjajo območja razširjenosti domorodnih organizmov ter prispevajo k upadanju občutljivih, ogroženih in funkcionalno pomembnih skupin. Posledice se kažejo v spremenjenih biotskih interakcijah, delovanju ekosistemov in ekosistemskih storitvah ter zdravju populacij, vplivajo pa lahko tudi na zdravje ljudi in gospodarstvo.
Program BiGOS bo povezal obstoječe raziskovalne kompetence raziskovalcev v skupen interdisciplinarni okvir. Kopenski, podzemni, sladkovodni in morski sistemi bodo uporabljeni kot komplementarni modeli za raziskovanje skupnih vprašanj: kako se biodiverziteta odziva na okoljske spremembe, kateri dejavniki določajo ranljivost ali odpornost populacij in združb ter kako se te spremembe prenašajo na ekosistemske funkcije in družbo, ter kako lahko spoznanja iz enih od teh sistemov informirajo znanstveno raziskovanje in varstvo drugih. Posebna pozornost bo namenjena biološkim invazijam, spremembam razširjenosti vrst, upadu opraševalcev, spremembam v številčnosti, razširjenosti in rabi habitata ogroženih skupin ter porajajočim se vektorjem in patogenom.
Program bo predvsem povezovalna in razvojna platforma. Z uporabo obstoječih podatkov, vzorcev, infrastrukture in tekočih raziskav bo spodbujal skupne analize, tvorbo novih idej, manjše interdisciplinarne pilotne raziskave, metodološke delavnice, skupne objave ter vključevanje mlajših raziskovalcev in študentov v integriran znanstveni proces. Dolgoročni cilj je oblikovati prepoznavno raziskovalno jedro UP, okrepiti pripravo skupnih prijav na razpise ARIS in mednarodne razpise ter vzpostaviti znanstveno, metodološko in organizacijsko osnovo za prihodnjo večjo in kompleksnejšo matično raziskovalno programsko skupino.
Biotic globalization and environmental change are rapidly reshaping biodiversity. Global movement of organisms, climate change, land-use change, habitat degradation and fragmentation, and other anthropogenic pressures simultaneously promote the spread of alien and invasive species, alter the ranges of native organisms, and contribute to declines in sensitive, threatened and functionally important groups. These changes affect biotic interactions, ecosystem functioning and services, and health of populations, with consequences for human health and the economy.
BiGOS will integrate the existing research expertise of the researchers within a common interdisciplinary framework. Terrestrial, subterranean, freshwater and marine systems will serve as complementary models for addressing shared questions: how biodiversity responds to environmental change, which factors determine the vulnerability or resilience of populations and communities, how these changes translate into effects on ecosystem functions and society, and how insights into one of these systems can inform the scientific research and conservation of others. Particular attention will be given to biological invasions, species range shifts, declines in pollinators, changes in abundance, distribution and habitat use of sensitive and threatened groups, and emerging vectors and pathogens.
The programme will primarily act as an integrative and developmental platform. By building on existing data, samples, infrastructure and ongoing research, it will support joint analyses, forming of new ideas, small interdisciplinary pilot studies, methodological workshops, joint publications, and the involvement of early-career researchers and students in an integrated scientific process. Its long-term goal is to establish a recognizable UP research core, strengthen joint applications to ARIS and international calls, and create the scientific, methodological and organizational basis for a future larger and more complex research group.
