Study programmes

Mathematics is the only universal language of human communication that is present at all levels of education. It forms the foundation of all natural sciences and is an indispensable tool in the social sciences and economics. At the same time, as the theoretical core of computer science, its influence is growing in all areas that will decisively shape the 21st century, such as modern economics, communications, data protection, national security, decoding the human genome, and many others.

UP FAMNIT offers mathematics study programmes at all three levels – the undergraduate academic study programme Mathematics and the master’s and doctoral study programme Mathematical Sciences. All three study programmes are conducted in parallel in Slovene and English.

UP FAMNIT also offers the academic study programme Mathematics and Computer Science (conducted in parallel in Slovene and English), which is designed as an interdisciplinary programme, enabling students to integrate solid mathematical foundations with contemporary foundations of computer science in a synergistic way.

The Department of Mathematics is one of the four leading global centres for algebraic graph theory and is strongly integrated into the international environment, both through research collaboration with colleagues from abroad and through the organisation of internationally recognised scientific events. It is also worth highlighting that 44.6% of the department’s employees – university teachers and researchers – come from abroad. The department closely cooperates in research with the Department of Mathematics at Andrej Marušič Institute of the University of Primorska. The department also regularly trains young researchers.
