Research group
The UP FAMNIT Research Group was established in 2008.
Our researchers specialize in the fields of mathematics, computer science, and informatics, covering areas such as algebra, combinatorics with graph theory and probability theory, as well as data structures, data mining, language technologies, computer vision, augmented reality, privacy management, and human-computer interaction. Their research is rooted in mathematical modelling and computer simulations, experimental economics, and social system analysis, with additional focus on electronic data protection—including cryptography, data security, and computer security.
Other prominent research areas within natural sciences include life sciences (plant production and processing), zoology and zoophysiology, biology (ecosystems and environmental protection), botany, chemistry (analytical chemistry), biochemistry, and molecular biology. In social sciences, the focus is on psychology and economics, while in medical sciences, research areas include neurobiology, psychiatry, microbiology, and immunology. The faculty’s research in psychiatry primarily concentrates on mental health, suicidal behaviour, and prevention of such conditions. The research team, comprising experts from psychology, psychiatry, genetics, neuroscience, biology, informatics, bioinformatics, and biostatistics, directs its efforts toward investigating the biopsychosocial determinants of one of the fundamental public health issues of our time—suicide.
The biopsychosocial research at UP FAMNIT also focuses on neurodegenerative diseases, which are increasingly prevalent in modern society. These conditions affect not only the elderly but also a growing number of young people. Research efforts are directed toward understanding the psychosocial consequences of these diseases for patients and their families, as well as neurobiological studies of neurodegenerative disorders. Additionally, the biopsychosocial research area explores psychological and biological determinants of various forms of psychotherapeutic work (e.g., prevention and management of stress, suicidal tendencies, addictions, neuroses, etc.) and the bio-psychological aspects of prevention, curative procedures, and rehabilitation.
The faculty’s research also extends to forestry, wood modification, and the functionalization of renewable materials, including process control of products made from renewable sources for sustainable construction, engineering of renewable materials, sustainable building practices, characterization of renewable materials, regenerative sustainable development, human health in built environments, IoT in the built environment, and modelling and holistic design of multi-story wooden buildings.
