The Applied Statistics International Conference (AS 2026) was held at UP FAMNIT from September 21 to 23, 2026, marking the fourth consecutive year the conference took place there. It is the official annual meeting of the Statistical Society of Slovenia. This year’s conference was attended by as many as 90 participants from 11 countries.
For more than two decades, the conference has been a key interdisciplinary meeting point for researchers, methodologists, and professionals in statistics, data science, and their applications. It offers participants a chance to present the latest research, exchange knowledge, and establish new scientific connections and collaborations.
Invited Lectures by Renowned Experts
An important part of this year’s programme was a pair of invited lectures by two internationally renowned experts.
Prof. Dr. Paula Brito from the University of Porto (Portugal) presented a lecture entitled Parametric sparse models for distributional data, while Prof. Dr. Georg Heinze from the Medical University of Vienna (Austria) gave a lecture entitled The Firth correction – a recap and new developments.
Three Days of Scientific and Professional Programme
As part of its three-day programme, the conference offered a rich selection of scientific content and opportunities to exchange cutting-edge research findings and practical knowledge.
The main part of the conference, held on September 21 and 22, featured an extensive scientific programme with peer-reviewed oral and poster presentations, as well as invited lectures by renowned experts.
The final day of the conference, September 23, was primarily dedicated to in-depth methodological learning, exploring modern statistical software tools, and presenting practical applications of statistical methods.
AS 2026 thus continues the tradition of bringing together different fields of statistics and creating an inspiring environment for developing new knowledge, exchanging experiences, and establishing new collaborations. Statistical methods play an important role in numerous fields, including social sciences, biomedicine, economics, engineering, data science, and artificial intelligence.
As conference organiser Assist. Dr. Ana Zalokar from Department of Mathematics explained, interdisciplinarity is one of the important aspects of the event:
“This year, we are hosting the Applied Statistics conference at FAMNIT for the fourth time, bringing together researchers from various fields of statistics – from social, mathematical, and official statistics to biostatistics, as well as from the fields of data science and artificial intelligence.”
This year’s AS 2026 conference once again provided a platform for connecting Slovenian and international researchers and for exchanging knowledge about modern statistical methods and their applications.
