Achievements of Employees and Students

Among this year’s recipients of the Zois Awards and Recognitions, two members of staff from UP FAMNIT were honored: Prof. Dr. Tomaž Pisanski, recipient of the Zois Award for Lifetime Achievement in the field of discrete mathematics, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Urban Bren, recipient of the Zois Recognition for Important Achievements in the field of biomolecular simulations.
In the most comprehensive global analysis of genetic diversity to date, an international team of scientists has found that genetic diversity is declining worldwide, although some conservation measures are helping to preserve species. The groundbreaking study, published in the prestigious scientific journal Nature, was led by Associate Professor Catherine Grueber from the School of Life and Environmental Sciences, together with a team of researchers from several countries. The study also involved Prof. Dr. Elena Bužan from the Department of Biodiversity at UP FAMNIT.
An international study involving 30 researchers, including Assist. Prof. Dr. Živa Fišer as part of the COST Action Alien CSI, has for the first time demonstrated that citizen science plays a crucial role in the early detection of invasive alien species. The study, also published in the journal People and Nature, analyzed 600 official reports from 30 countries and compared them with more than 220 million records from public platforms. It is the first study to actually measure the impact of citizen science on the early detection of invasive alien species.
On Saturday, February 22, to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of legendary Slovenian animator, illustrator, comic book artist, sculptor, journalist, and film director Miki Muster (1925–2018), the short animated film “A Leap into the Future” was screened at the Slovenian Cinematheque. Two researchers from the Department of Information Sciences and Technologies at UP FAMNIT also contributed to the film’s production: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Klen Čopič Pucihar served as co-producer and motion capture system administrator, while Assist. Dr. Anuradhi Maheshya W. Weerasinghe Arachchillage worked as a motion capture assistant.
An international group of researchers from Montenegro, France, Croatia, China, Slovenia, and Spain has announced the discovery and description of a new plant genus and species, Petrolamium crnojevicii Dragićević, Vuksanović & Surina, from a remote and difficult-to-access area of Montenegro. Two researchers from the Department of Biodiversity at UP FAMNIT also contributed to the study: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Boštjan Surina, who led the research, and Assist. Prof. Dr. Peter Glasnović. Modern molecular-genetic and cytogenetic methods, together with classical approaches, clearly established the phylogenetic position and evolutionary history of the new taxon. Slovenia has successfully secured funding through a European call for proposals to acquire a high-performance supercomputer. Slovenia received the highest score among the applicants, and the project received numerous commendations. On behalf of the University of Primorska, two researchers from UP IAM and UP FAMNIT contributed to the preparation of the project: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jernej Vičič and Assist. Prof. Dr. Aleksandar Tošić.
Every year, the University of Primorska Week takes place, featuring the University’s Ceremonial Academy, where awards are presented to individuals who have contributed to the university’s reputation, development, and success through their work or activities.
Researchers from UP FAMNIT received the award for the Best Paper at the 30th Annual ACM Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces (ACM IUI 2025), held from March 24 to 27 in Cagliari, Italy. The paper was co-authored by 12 researchers, including Assist. Dr. Nuwan T. Attygalle, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Matjaž Kljun, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Klen Čopič Pucihar, and Assist. Prof. Dr. Maheshya Weerasinghe from UP FAMNIT.
On Thursday, April 17, 2025, there was a reason to celebrate: at the University of Primorska Alumni Ceremonial Gathering, recognitions and awards were presented for the second consecutive year to individuals who support the work of Alumni UP and help promote the university’s good reputation. We are also proud to present our award recipient: Dr. Nina Krohne, an alumna of UP FAMNIT.
Dr. Ana Slavec, Assistant Professor at UP FAMNIT and a researcher at InnoRenew CoE, attended the 32nd Days of Slovenian Informatics, held on April 15 and 16, 2025, in Portorož under the central theme “A Digital Future for Everyone”. At the event, she chaired the judging panel for the Arnes HackathON competition, which selected the three best student teams competing to create solutions to real-world challenges.
Researchers from the Department of Applied Natural Sciences at UP FAMNIT attended the 11th International Mediterranean Symposium on Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (MESMAP), held from May 6 to 8, 2025, as part of the international fruit and vegetable trade fair MACFRUT 2025 in Rimini, Italy. The event also featured a special exhibition dedicated to spices, medicinal and aromatic plants, as well as the international MESMAP symposium, where Assist. Prof. Dr. Alenka Baruca Arbeiter and Petra Gabrovšek presented their research on the Mediterranean plant immortelle in a poster presentation.
Each year, the Slovenian Science Foundation presents the Prometheus of Science Awards for excellence in science communication, the highest and only national recognition in Slovenia dedicated to individuals and organizations that excel in communicating science to diverse audiences, particularly the general public. At the 2025 award ceremony, held on 17 June 2025 at the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SAZU), three recipients were affiliated with the University of Primorska—two individuals and a partnership of three organizations recognized for a joint project. Dr. Peter Glasnović (UP FAMNIT) received the Prometheus of Science Award, while Prof. Dr. Andrej Brodnik (UP FAMNIT) received the Prometheus of Science award for exemplary donation.
Prof. Dr. Elena Bužan is the lead first author of a new publication in the prestigious journal Molecular Ecology. The paper emphasizes that, in order to fully realize the potential of genomics in biodiversity conservation, the scientific community must develop and adopt harmonized standards that are designed with stakeholders’ needs in mind. The publication was led by Prof. Dr. Elena Bužan from the Molecular Ecology Group within the Department of Biodiversity at UP FAMNIT.
A new study from the Department of Biodiversity, co-authored by Assist. Prof. Dr. Živa Fišer and Prof. Andrea Pieroni from the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Pollenzo (Italy), examines the current state of wild plant foraging in Slovenia and explores how knowledge about useful wild plants is transmitted today. Through interviews with experienced educators who teach foraging skills, the researchers investigated their motivations, educational approaches, and their role in preventing harmful foraging practices.
A new study from the Department of Biodiversity, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jure Jugovic in collaboration with Assist. Prof. Dr. Martin Lužnik, reveals how the presence of the invasive goldfish (Carassius auratus) affects dragonfly communities in sub-Mediterranean ponds.
Dr. Marko Tkalčič (UP FAMNIT and UP IAM) received the Gold Medal of the University of Primorska for 2024.
Dr. Diego De Leo (UP FAMNIT and UP IAM) received the 2024 UP Scientific Excellence Award.
Andrej Milisavljević and Niki Horvat received the 2024 Srečko Kosovel Award for UP Students.
Gabriela Laznik Zalaznik received the 2024 UP Prize for UP Students.
For the first time in Slovenia, a research team from the Department of Biodiversity, led by Assoc. Prof. Jure Jugovic and including Assoc. Prof. Vladimir Ivović, Assist. Prof. Anka Kuhelj, and Assistant Alenka Babič, investigated the influence of slope orientation on the distribution of the tick Ixodes ricinus on Mount Slavnik.
Prof. Dr. Marko Tkalčič and Research Assistant Arsen Matej Golubović from the Department of Information Sciences and Technologies at UP FAMNIT are co-authors of the international study Soundtracks of Our Lives: How Age Influences Musical Preferences. The research was conducted in collaboration with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bruce Ferwerda from Jönköping University and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Alan Said from the University of Gothenburg.
UP FAMNIT,at the initiative of the Department of Biodiversity, has signed the Memorandum of Understanding with the National Pantanal Research Institute (INPP) from Brazil. The agreement opens new opportunities for joint research projects, student and staff exchanges, and further strengthens the already established collaboration with the Federal University of Mato Grosso (UFMT).
