THE HERBARIUM OF THE UNIVERSITY OF PRIMORSKA – PART OF THE WORLDWIDE HERBARIUM COLLECTIONS AND BOTANICAL RESEARCH

Event Details

  • Date:

Dr. Peter Glasnović will present the development and history of the Herbarium of the University of Primorska, which was established in 2008 and now comprises more than 6,000 specimens of seed plants, ferns and fern allies, mosses, and macroalgae.

The herbarium collection is geographically focused primarily on the western part of the Balkan Peninsula and the southeastern Alps, with particular emphasis on collecting and preserving plant material from Istria and the Slovenian flora.

An important milestone in the development of the Herbarium of the University of Primorska was its inclusion in the international Index Herbariorum in 2024. With the acquisition of its international herbarium code, the Herbarium of the University of Primorska joined a network of more than 3,500 herbaria worldwide.

During the lecture, Dr. Peter Glasnović will also present the importance of herbarium collections for botanical research and their contribution to the understanding and preservation of plant diversity. He will discuss the future plans for the collection, including its organisation and digitisation, which will facilitate access to information and make it more readily available to the wider public.

The event is held as part of the European Heritage Days.
