The Ministry of Education, Science and Youth published on the eVŠ portal the list of available places for enrolment into undergraduate studies (Bachelor degree) in the 2nd application period for Slovenians and EU citizens and Slovenians abroad. The 2nd application period for Slovenians and EU citizens and Slovenians abroad is open from 20 to 27 August 2026. 47 Years Later, an Answer to Mathematician Dragan Marušič’s Question

After nearly five decades, the answer to a question posed by Slovenian mathematician Prof. Dragan Marušič in 1979 is finally known: yes. Young mathematicians Saul D. Freedman and Melissa Lee have found a counterexample that disproves the policirculant conjecture. Their result is an important development in discrete mathematics and graph theory and has attracted considerable attention from the research community. In 1979, then 26-year-old doctoral student Dragan Marušič posed a question during a lecture in Cambridge that went on to become one of the major open problems in discrete mathematics: Does there exist a finite vertex-transitive graph without a semiregular automorphism? The question remained unanswered for almost half a century. Over the years, it attracted many prominent researchers and became an important open problem at the intersection of algebraic graph theory and the theory of finite permutation groups, while also connecting with other areas of mathematics. Now, young mathematicians Saul D. Freedman and Melissa Lee have provided an answer. In a preprint posted on arXiv on July 26, 2026, they showed that such a graph does exist, providing a counterexample to the policirculant conjecture. Their work is particularly striking given the long history of the problem. Many earlier results had pointed in the opposite direction: the policirculant conjecture had been proved for various families of graphs, including graphs of valency 3 and 4. The final breakthrough therefore came unexpectedly. Instead of proving that the conjecture holds in general, the researchers found a counterexample. The smallest example they present has 16,464 vertices and valency 63. Their research also made use of computational tools, but the core of the result rests on a mathematical construction and deep theoretical work. When a Good Mathematical Question Survives for Decades For the University of Primorska, the achievement is particularly significant because Prof. Dragan Marušič has been a long-standing researcher at the university and is one of Slovenia’s most prominent mathematicians in the field of graph theory. His question, first posed in 1979, has thus received an answer 47 years later. Prof. Dragan Marušič Prof. Dr. Tomaž Pisanski, a mathematician who also works at the University of Primorska, is a leading expert at the intersection of theoretical computer science and discrete mathematics. In an article for the newspaper Delo about the question that remained unanswered for 47 years, he highlights the importance of asking good mathematical questions. Good questions often drive the development of new methods and theories, while their answers may emerge only after decades of research. Prof. Dr. Dragan Marušič’s achievement and the latest development in the problem therefore offer a remarkable example of the long-term impact of research. A question posed by a young Slovenian mathematician almost half a century ago remains part of active mathematical research today. Prof. Dr. Tomaž Pisanski’s own reflections also offer an interesting perspective on the passage of time. Last year, he received the Zois Award for Lifetime Achievement in discrete mathematics. As early as 1970, in an interview with Mladina, he predicted: “Whoever controls computers will rule the world.” More than five decades later, in his article for Delo, he reflects on the growing influence of artificial intelligence on mathematical research and on how it could eventually change the very nature of mathematical work. His earlier prediction now sounds remarkably relevant—not simply as a statement about the future of computers, but as a question about how humans will work alongside increasingly powerful computer systems. The newspaper Delo has also published an extensive report on the achievement, in which Prof. Dr. Tomaž Pisanski presents the history of the problem, its significance for the development of mathematics, and the unexpected breakthrough brought about by Saul D. Freedman and Melissa Lee. Meet the Mathematicians Who Answered Marušič’s Question The story will continue in Slovenia next year. An international graph theory conference will be held in Bled in June 2027, with Saul D. Freedman and Melissa Lee among the invited participants. Apply for Short Education and Training Programmes Leading to Micro-Credentials

In the 2026/2027 academic year, the University of Primorska is publishing, for the first time, a call for enrolment in short education and training programmes upon completion of which participants receive a micro-credential. Unlike macro-credentials (such as degrees and licences), micro-credentials are shorter in duration and focus on a specific, narrower topic. Within the education system, they complement degrees but cannot replace them. For the 2026/2027 academic year, the University of Primorska is offering 24 education and training programmes provided by six UP faculties and the UP NEBAP Hub. All interested individuals – including students, employees and members of the general public – are eligible to participate. The programmes are awarded ECTS credits, while micro-credentials enable participants to acquire new knowledge and competences quickly and flexibly, which they can also use in further education or on the labour market. Applications are submitted via an online application form by 15 August 2026 (the deadline has been extended to September 10, 2026.) for programmes taking place in the first semester, or by 15 January 2027 for programmes taking place in the second semester. The International Conference InnoRenew CoE 2026 (IRIC2026) invites submissions of abstracts and active participation at the conference until 15 September 2026. The conference will be held 5–6 November 2026 at the InnoRenew CoE building in Izola. IRIC2026 provides an opportunity to share and discuss emerging science and innovations in renewable materials and their use in creating healthy and sustainable buildings. The conference places special emphasis on supporting the career development of PhD students and early career researchers. Successful International Collaboration with the University of Bergen

From 3 to 7 August, the Department of Information Sciences and Technologies at UP FAMNIT is welcoming Prof. Dr. Mehdi Elahi from the University of Bergen in Norway. He is visiting at the invitation of Prof. Dr. Marko Tkalčič, continuing their successful research partnership. The goal of this visit is to build on their collaboration, share knowledge, and plan new research together in personalization, recommender systems, and artificial intelligence. During his visit, we asked Prof. Elahi about the purpose of his stay, his collaboration with Prof. Dr. Marko Tkalčič, and his impressions of Slovenia and Koper. What was the purpose of your visit here? Thank you very much for inviting me. We have been thinking about making this visit for quite some time. Prof. Tkalčič kindly visited us in Norway, and this was a great opportunity to visit your university and faculty in return and to explore possibilities for future collaboration. We have been collaborating for several years, and some excellent research outcomes have resulted from it. I am looking forward to continuing our collaboration and seeing what we can achieve together in the future. How was the collaboration with Prof. Tkalčič? We have known each other through previous projects, and they have all been successful. We thought it would be a good idea to strengthen this collaboration further and expand it to include our institutions as well. We are both working on topics related to personalization, recommender systems, and AI, which is becoming increasingly important across many fields. We had some great meetings and got to know colleagues who are interested in and will hopefully be involved in this type of research. Overall, it has been a great collaboration and a very enjoyable visit so far. Do you see any future collaborations? Absolutely. This collaboration has been very successful, and I believe there are many opportunities ahead, including writing joint publications, closer supervision of PhD and Master’s students, and other collaborative projects. We have already done some of this in the past, and I am looking forward to continuing and expanding our cooperation. What was your first impression of Koper? It is an amazing city, and it exceeded my expectations. It is a beautiful place with wonderful people and an excellent educational institution. I am really impressed. Prof. Dr. Mehdi Elahi’s visit is an important step in building stronger ties between UP FAMNIT and international research institutions. These exchanges help develop joint research projects, open up new opportunities for researchers and students to work together, and raise the faculty’s profile around the world.

A Week of Innovation, Collaboration, and New Ideas: Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme “Artificial Intelligence in Future Mobility”

The international Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) titled “Artificial Intelligence in the Mobility of the Future” was hosted by the Faculty from 27 to 31 July 2026. The programme brought together students and academics from several European universities, providing them with the opportunity to gain deeper insight into current approaches to applying artificial intelligence and data analysis in the field of future mobility. The programme was delivered by Assoc. Prof. Branko Kavšek (University of Primorska, Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Information Technologies – UP FAMNIT), Prof. Toralf Trautmann (HTW Dresden – University of Applied Sciences), and Prof. Tomasz Wesołowski (University of Silesia). It was further enriched by guest lectures delivered by Prof. Eric Medvet, Dr Rafaella Cefalo, and Dr Tatiana Sluga (all from the University of Trieste), as well as Polona Pavlovič Prešeren from the Faculty of Civil and Geodetic Engineering at the University of Ljubljana. Through a diverse and intensive programme, participants took part in lectures, hands-on workshops, and collaborative group projects, where they expanded their knowledge of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data analytics. Special emphasis was placed on the application of these technologies in autonomous vehicles and other innovative solutions for future mobility. By working with real-world datasets, students gained valuable practical experience, developed their analytical and research skills, and explored current challenges faced by professionals in this rapidly evolving field. Participants also had the opportunity to explore Koper and its surroundings, while various social activities helped strengthen international connections and encouraged the exchange of experiences among peers. Michał Szadziewski, a student from the University of Silesia, shared his impressions: “This is my first Erasmus+ BIP and also my first visit to Slovenia. I am very happy to have the opportunity to be here, learn something new and exciting about artificial intelligence, especially in the field of future mobility. As a mechatronics student, I am looking forward to gaining new knowledge and valuable experience in this beautiful country.” Katarzyna Kusztal, a PhD student in Computer Science at the University of Silesia, also expressed her enthusiasm: “I also work in the field of artificial intelligence, but my research mainly focuses on data classification rather than the application of AI in future mobility. I am excited to learn something new here.” One of the key objectives of the programme was to promote international cooperation, knowledge exchange, and collaboration among students from different academic disciplines. The participation of distinguished national and international experts provided students with valuable insights into the latest research approaches while creating opportunities to establish new professional connections. Reflecting on the programme, Prof. Toralf Trautmann emphasized the value of such international initiatives: “I can say that the programme was very successful. The groups worked efficiently and effectively, and they collaborated exceptionally well. Participants shared their knowledge with one another, which was reflected in the high quality of the final results. I also learned a great deal myself, as the presentations delivered by the individual groups were both interesting and insightful. Each group addressed a different challenge, making it particularly fascinating to observe the variety of approaches and solutions. I am convinced that the participants enjoyed the entire experience, especially the time they spent in Koper.” The programme brought together students from Vytautas Magnus University (Lithuania), HTW Dresden – University of Applied Sciences (Germany), the University of Silesia in Katowice (Poland), and UP FAMNIT (Slovenia). In addition to the academic activities, participants highlighted the importance of the international environment, the exchange of experiences, and the opportunity to learn about different cultures. Hasib Kolaković, a student at UP FAMNIT, also highlighted the benefits of participating in the programme: “Participating in the BIP programme allowed me to learn and work in areas that truly inspire me, particularly machine learning and computer vision. At the same time, I met many wonderful people from Lithuania, Germany, and Poland, and formed friendships that I believe will last a lifetime.” The Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme once again demonstrated that international collaboration provides an excellent opportunity to connect academic knowledge with practical experience. Participants returned home with new professional skills, valuable international connections, and numerous ideas for future cooperation in the fields of artificial intelligence and future mobility.

The second Saturday of October once again brings the opportunity for a networking event designed to connect students with companies from the Coastal-Karst region, as well as representatives from sports and cultural associations, humanitarian and other non-governmental organizations. This sports-social event, which attracted nearly 500 participants last year, will be taking place for the fifth time and offers a fantastic opportunity to present your activities to students from the University of Primorska through various engaging formats. Join us on October 10th, 2026, at Žusterna Seaside Park approx. from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. We invite you to prepare a short sport, cultural, artistic or other activity and present yourself to students and the wider public at your designated spot. Once again, businesses will have access to the EXPO corner, where you can network with students, present your products and services, and make a strong first impression on potential new recruits and the general public. Each participating organization will receive a small stamp, which students collect on their event cards by completing activities. These cards can then be entered into a prize draw, where students are symbolically rewarded for their engagement. Last year, over 60 exhibitors showed their work, many of whom gained new members and volunteers as a result of the event. Strengthening Research Collaboration with China

Last week, three colleagues from the Department of Mathematics visited China on a research trip: the Rector of the University of Primorska, Professor Klavdija Kutnar, Assistant to the Rector Professor Dragan Marušič, and Professor Aleksander Malnič. During their visit, they focused primarily on research collaboration, working with their Chinese colleagues to explore solutions to several well-known research problems. In addition, they delivered lectures for students at Beijing Jiaotong University and Henan Normal University. As part of the visit, the Rector also met with Miloš Prislan, Minister Plenipotentiary and Head of the Visa and Consular Section at the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Beijing. Their discussion focused on the University of Primorska’s cooperation with partner institutions in the region and future staffing needs. Particular emphasis was placed on the importance of Chinese language proficiency and translation expertise, areas in which the University of Primorska continues to develop and strengthen its approach each year.
