The University of Primorska, in cooperation with the University of Trieste, organised the first T4EU Week (Transform4Europe Week: Beyond Borders), in the new series of European University Transform4Europe Weeks, from 20 to 24 May 2024. On the first day, 20 May, the World Bee Day proposed by Slovenia, UP and UNITS welcomed the participants with special gifts – Slovenian honey prepared by UP, produced by our employees, and UNITS coffee. In this way, they showed the special nature of the surroundings with their cuisine and presented the guests with sustainable gifts. The first part of the programme then took place in Trieste from 19 to 22 May, followed by a visit to UP, Koper and Izola from Wednesday 22 to 24 May. The programme was divided into break-out sessions dealing with the importance of entrepreneurial skills and the environmental, digital and social transition. Buildings Design driven by New European Bauhaus Heritage beyond Borders for Societal Transformation: Interpretation and Education Exploring Methods for Multicultural Social Science Research in the Contemporary Era Environmental Genomics Symmetry in Graphs Suicide without Borders Digital Marketing and Consumers Behaviour Collaborative Innovation and Design of Solutions in Tourism several events aimed at the general public took place. In this context, particularly in the context of the Research section: Open Science, Fair Data and Creative Commons, Pecha Kucha and Bridging Communities: Dialogue and Action for Inclusive Futures. Of particular importance was the satellite conference of the Rectors’ Conference of the RS on Friday on the Internationalisation of higher education and the role of European universities in this process. The T4EU week is also a great opportunity for networking and making new contacts among the participants. This was evident at the dinners and lunches as well as during the SportUP activities on the beaches of Koper, the social activities organised by ESN Primorska, a morning literary walk, a healthy breakfast and other activities. On the occasion of the T4EU week, the InnoRenew CoE research institute also installed special benches on the terrace next to the Rectorate – the wood for them was sourced from known locations in Slovenian forests, and the design and production was done entirely in cooperation with the institute and UP maintenance staff. The Institute has also prepared a special baton that will accompany the weeks across Europe, as each university will hang a leaflet on the wooden tree and pass it on after the organised week. We look forward to continuing to go beyond borders and extend our strong European commitment to partners who want to change the environment for a better future.

The University of Primorska celebrates its anniversary every year in the week around 17 March, since it was entered in the Court Register on 17 March 2003. Thus, every year, the UP Week takes place, and within it there is always a Solemn Academy, at which the UP awards prizes to all those who have contributed to the reputation, development and success of the University through their work or activities. This year’s Academy started with a special occasion – in the company of the first Rector, Dr. Lucija Čok, both Rectors – Dr. Rado Bohinc and Dr. Dragan Marušič, Dr. Klavdija Kutnar, who wore the current insignia during her first term, accepted the new insignia. The first Rector’s insignia was donated by the designer Oskar Kogoj at the time of its creation, and now all those who proudly and responsibly wore it have put it in a commemorative frame with their signatures. With the new decade, the design of the new insignia was donated to the University by the academic painter Dr. Tilen Žbona, a teacher at the University of Primorska and the initiator of the establishment of the Visual Arts and Design art study programmes at the University of Primorska. The participants were first addressed by the Rector of UP, Prof. Dr. Klavdija Kutnar, who emphasised in her speech: »Our university, which is still mostly portrayed only as the youngest and smallest public university in the Republic of Slovenia, is thus taking a leading role in shaping the future of the construction ecosystem in the European Union and is committed to the three core values of the New European Bauhaus: sustainability, beauty and inclusion.« Lana Erjavec, President of the UP Student Council, gave a special greeting to the students: »I would like to thank all the students for your significant contribution to co-creating our academic community. I appreciate that you dedicate your free time and energy to improving the experience of all UP students. I am always impressed by how driven we are, eager for knowledge and willing to make the world a better place.« Last year, we hosted the keynote speaker Mariya Gabriel, in her role as European Commissioner, who has made her efforts to strengthen higher education institutions a reality through the creation of ENIHEI – the European Network of Innovative Higher Education Institutions, of which UP is a member. This year, she was invited to be the keynote speaker, but had to limit her presence to a video address, due to her commitments related to the assumption of the Presidency of the Government of the Republic of Bulgaria. We will meet her in person at UP when she will be awarded the UP Honorary Doctorate for 2023. In her address, she emphasized: »I’d like to congratulate everyone at the University of Primorska and thank your fore being an active participant in key European initiatives in the areas of higher education. You are a concrete example, how by connecting the spheres of innovation and education we can encourage the entrepreneurial spirit of the next generation.« The UP Prizes for 2023 were awarded.

This week, the University of Alicante was hosting the international T4EU Week, a doctoral symposium and a round table on digital transformation, within the framework of the European alliance Transform4Europe. The event was attended by more than 200 people from 8 countries. Students, doctoral students and teaching staff from the different universities could join four specialisation workshops in digital transformation, which were addressing current issues such as the management of massive data, the use of technologies for second language learning, the retrieval of musical information or how to become a Knowledge Entrepreneur. The Doctoral Symposium on Artificial Intelligence (11 and 12 May) was organised jointly with the Doctoral Programme in Computer Science of the University of Alicante. The University of Primorska, soon to be full member of T4EU, was represented by five doctoral students to participate in the event: Niki Hrovatin, Domen Vake, Uroš Sergaš, Maheshya Weerasinghe and Matej Arsen Golubovikj. Assoc. Prof. Matjaž Kljun and Assoc. Prof. Klen Čopič Pucihar from the Department of Information Sciences and Technologies at UP FAMNIT attended the round table, where the numerous legal challenges of digital transformation were discussed. Our researchers introduced their lines of research related to this field of study to explore possibilities for collaboration with other international partners. Besides the core programme, the participants also had the opportunity to various cultural activities, such as a visit to the emblematic Santa Bárbara Castle or a visit to the Alicante Casino.
